Hydrocele and Hydrocelectomy

A hydrocele is a collection of fluid around the testicle. When you are developing, a thin sac called the process vaginalis descends into the scrotum. After the testes and surrounding structures descend into the scrotum, the trailing end of this process vaginalis will close and isolate the structures from the abdominal cavity. The failure of this sac to close allows a communication with the abdominal cavity and fluid can seep through the process vaginalis and collect into the scrotum. This results in a fluid filled sac around the testicle. If the opening in the process vaginalis is larger, then intestine can slip through this opening and this results in a hernia.

hydrocelectomy in Florida

Hydrocelectomy involves a small incision on the scrotum and then dissecting down to the fluid filled sac. The sac is drained of the fluid and opened up completely. It is then everted around the testicle and sutured behind the testicle and this prevents  re-accumulation of the fluid. A drain may be used after the surgery in order to avoid excessive inflammation in the scrotum.
